“The world has lost a man of dialogue, of principle and of conviction. Israel has lost one of its prominent figures. Our Assembly has lost a friend,” today declared Pedro Agramunt, President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), extending sincere condolences on behalf of the Assembly to the family of Shimon Peres and to the people of Israel.
“As a long-standing parliamentarian, having spent 48 years in parliament, Mr Peres staunchly upheld the values the Council of Europe stands for. When he addressed our Assembly in January 2002, he said Palestinians were not the enemies of Israel. ‘Our enemies are neither their religion nor their state. Our enemy is your enemy, and that is terror,’ Mr Peres said. I’m deeply proud that, by launching the #HoHateNoFear initiative in June this year, our Assembly is helping to spread his message,” Mr Agramunt said.
“May his memory and legacy guide all those who are working towards peace so that ultimately all people without distinction, can equally enjoy respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law. Our Assembly will continue to work in that direction”, the PACE President concluded.
