The Parliamentary Assembly marks breast-cancer awareness month

On 12 October 2016, the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development organised a breast cancer awareness-raising event. The President and members of the Assembly as well as the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, showed their support by wearing the pink ribbon distributed on the occasion.

In a Resolution adopted in 2014, the Assembly recommended that member States keep the fight against breast cancer at the top of their health agendas and ensure that women have effective access to European guidelines-compliant screening and treatment programmes. It also recommended the establishment and maintenance of national cancer registries, the outlawing of discrimination against breast cancer patients on the basis of their disease status, and the encouragement of co-operation amongst researchers with a view to reducing mortality rates and improving the quality of life of individual patients.

Every year, the month of October is marked by breast cancer awareness raising events in countries across the world. Breast cancer awareness day is celebrated on 15 October.
