PACE monitors to visit the Republic of Moldova

Egidijus Vareikis (Lithuania, EPP/CD) and Maryvonne Blondin (France, SOC), co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of the Republic of Moldova by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), are to visit the country from 3 to 5 April 2018 to prepare their latest assessment of how far it is honouring its Council of Europe obligations and commitments.

They will be seeking to be updated on the latest political developments, preparations for the 2018 parliamentary elections, and recent legislative developments as regards democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

In Chişinău, meetings are foreseen with the President of the Republic, Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament, the Justice and Internal Affairs Ministers, the President of the Constitutional Court, the General Prosecutor, the head of the Central Election Commission and the head of the National Anti-Corruption Centre. They are also due to meet the leaders of different political groupings in the parliament, as well as NGO and media representatives.

In Comrat, the co-rapporteurs will meet the Governor of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, the head of Gagauzia’s People’s Assembly and local civil society representatives.
