Rapporteur ‘outraged’ at execution in Alabama of 83-year-old after 30 years on death row

Yves Cruchten (Luxembourg, SOC), General Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on the abolition of the death penalty, has expressed outrage at the execution on Thursday evening in Alabama of 83-year-old convicted murderer Walter Leroy Moody, by a lethal injection of drugs.

“This was the second execution in Alabama and the eighth in the USA this year. Mr Moody was executed after having spent 30 years in prison. He was most probably the oldest inmate put to death in the United States in modern times. I am deeply shocked by the circumstances of this execution,” the rapporteur said.

“The death penalty is always cruel and inhumane punishment, whatever the crime,” said Mr Cruchten, who called on Alabama to put an end to executions.
