Basic rights of LGBTI people are still flouted, says general rapporteur

“Over the last year we have seen regrettable setbacks in the situation of the daily lives of many LGBTI people in Europe,” said Piet De Bruyn (Belgium, NR), General Rapporteur on the rights of LGBTI people, speaking on the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, 17 May 2018.

Pointing out that not only the right to liberty and security but also freedom of expression and freedom of assembly had come under pressure, he paid tribute to the professionalism and persistence of human rights defenders who work to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of all LGBTI people, even when this puts their own comfort and safety at risk.

He called on politicians and decision-makers to promote an inclusive society in which every LGBTI person can express their identity freely and without fear.
