More diversity in politics

Women, people with an immigration background, minorities, young people, LGBTI people and persons with disabilities remain under-represented in politics, stated the PACE Standing Committee today, meeting in Zagreb. This perpetuates the idea that politics is reserved for a select group, “composed mostly of white, heterosexual men over fifty,” it said.

In adopting unanimously a resolution, based on the report by Killion Munyama (Poland, EPP/CD), PACE proposed a set of measures to improve the participation and representation of people from a diverse background in the political system. “Greater representativeness of elected institutions would enhance the quality and legitimacy of their decision-making and increase people’s trust in the political system,” said the parliamentarians.

Finally, the Assembly called on national parliaments to ensure greater transparency and inclusiveness in their work, while taking internal measures to combat hate speech, and invited political parties to promote diversity and equality in their internal functioning.
