Istanbul Pride ban: peaceful Pride marches should be protected, not stopped

“The decision of the governor of Istanbul to ban the Istanbul Pride march of 1 July 2018, for the fourth year in a row, is a deeply regrettable breach of the fundamental right to freedom of assembly,” said Piet De Bruyn (Belgium, NR), General Rapporteur on the rights of LGBTI people, today. “Reports of the use by police of tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse those peacefully gathered are also worrying.”

“The right to hold such demonstrations has been upheld by the European Court of Human Rights,” the General Rapporteur stressed. “Peaceful Pride marches should be protected, not stopped.”
