Albania: rapporteurs welcome agreement between opposition and ruling majority on electoral reform

The monitoring co-rapporteurs for Albania of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Andrej Hunko (Germany UEL) and Joseph O’Reilly (Ireland, EPP/CD) welcomed the agreement reached yesterday between the main opposition parties, the parliamentary opposition and the ruling majority on the framework of co-operation on electoral reform. They were also heartened by the commitment expressed by all parties to come to a consensual agreement on these reforms in the very near future.

“This is an important step forwards to resolve the ongoing political crisis in the country. We call upon all stakeholders to co-operate constructively and in good faith in this framework, in order to achieve an as wide as possible consensus on an electoral framework that can have the trust of all stakeholders in the electoral process in Albania. That would in turn be a big step forwards with regard to the country’s democratic consolidation,” said the two co-rapporteurs. The co-rapporteurs will closely follow these developments and intend to visit the country in the near future.
