18/12/2020 Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons
On International Migrants Day, Pierre-Alain Fridez (Switzerland, SOC), Chair of the Migration Committee, made a pressing appeal for increased protection of migrant workers against exploitation and the violation of their human rights.
“Thirty years ago, on 18 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. Ten years later, its resolution 55/93 proclaimed 18 December as International Migrants Day. The 20th International Migrants Day is today a day to celebrate, but it also demands our action.
In the face of increasing migration in a globalised world and at a time when a pandemic is weighing down people around the world, migrant workers need more protection against exploitation and the violation of their human rights. PACE Resolution 2340 (2020) on the humanitarian consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic for migrants and refugees reminds our governments and parliaments that more needs to be done in this respect.”
