“The recent military clashes between the Palestinian authorities in Gaza and the State of Israel have had serious humanitarian consequences for the populations concerned, in particular civilians who perished in Gaza and in Israel”, said Pierre-Alain Fridez (Switzerland, SOC), Chairperson of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons.
“Among these deaths were Palestinian and Israeli school children, including 19 children who attended an UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) school in Gaza”, he added.
Mr Fridez went on to say: “The circle of violence must end and I call on the international community to support the contribution of UNRWA in serving the humanitarian needs of refugees and establishing the rule of law and sustainable peaceful cohabitation in the region. The PACE Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons stands ready to cooperate with the PACE delegations from the Knesset of Israel and the Palestinian Legislative Council.”
Mr Fridez took part today in the current affairs debate on the theme 'It is urgent to relaunch the peace process in the Middle East and prevent a resumption of violence', organised within the framework of the PACE Standing Committee.
