“Belarus has become a threat to the whole of Europe, especially to neighbouring countries, with a real risk of destabilisation”, said Emanuelis Zingeris (Lithuania, EPP/CD), opening of a current affairs debate on this topic.
Mr Zingeris referred to the forced landing of a civilian airliner by the Belarusian authorities on 23 May and the arrest of the opponent Roman Protasevich, as well as to recent measures taken by the EU to sanction the country. He also denounced the illegal detentions and torture of political opponents and called for early elections.
Ten members took the floor in the debate.
No report is prepared for a current affairs debate, and no text is adopted.
