PACE rapporteur welcomes revision of the Pompidou Group’s statute

The Rapporteur for follow-up to Parliamentary Assembly Resolution 2335 (2020) and Recommendation 2177 (2020) on “Drug policy and human rights in Europe: a baseline study”, Hannah Bardell (United Kingdom, NR), welcomed the adoption by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe of a revised statute for the Council of Europe's International Co-operation Group on Drugs and Addictions (the new title of the “Pompidou Group”, which reflects its newly extended mandate).

“The revised statute reflects clearly the changes that have taken place in society over the last fifty years, since the Pompidou Group was created,” said Ms Bardell. "I am glad that the Committee of Ministers has taken the Assembly's proposals into account, especially when it comes to promoting respect for human rights in the framing, adoption, implementation and evaluation of drug policies”.

"I call on the authorities of the member States of the Pompidou Group, as well as the Group's main partners, to ensure that their drug policies are consistent with international human rights standards and a public health approach, as requested by the Assembly in its resolution 2335,” the rapporteur concluded.
