28/09/2021 Session
In her regular dialogue with the PACE, Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić underlined the vital importance of Council of Europe member states fully implementing the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights. This is a non-negotiable obligation, essential for upholding the system of the European Convention on Human Rights. She called upon member states to further apply and embrace the principle of subsidiarity, whereby the Convention is implemented by national judges drawing on the Court’s jurisprudence, resulting in a reduction in the number of cases coming to Strasbourg.
Regarding the Organisation’s potential participation in dialogue concerning areas of unresolved conflict, the Secretary General emphasised the Council of Europe’s role in safeguarding democratic security and pointed to the importance of its monitoring bodies having unhindered access to such areas.
With the 60th anniversary of the European Social Charter approaching, the Secretary General stressed the need for the renewed effectiveness of the Social Charter system and emphasised that she made proposals to that effect to the Committee of Ministers.
