“I’m seriously concerned for the safety of African, Asian and Middle Eastern students as they flee Ukraine,” said Momodou Malcolm Jallow (Sweden, UEL), PACE rapporteur on a new Charter for a non-racist society.

“We’ve seen increasing reports of racist violence and discrimination. The European Union has an obligation to ensure protection for all. Race, skin colour or ethnicity does not make us less worthy of protection,” he stressed.

“The right to seek refuge and asylum is applicable to all, regardless of race or origin. We must avoid racialising human rights and ensure that the principles of equal treatment and protection are applied to all.

War is always a devastating experience and we must ensure that all people that seek refuge can be protected and given full access to their rights without being discriminated on the basis of race or nationality,” Mr Jallow concluded.
