Official award ceremony of the 2022 Europe Prize to the city of Izmir

On 24 September, the city of İzmir (Türkiye) held a ceremony to celebrate the official award of the Europe Prize 2022, in the agora of the ancient city of Smyrna and in the presence of a large public and local, regional and national representatives.

On this occasion, Selin Sayek Böke, Chairperson of PACE Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development; Carmen Leyte, Chairperson of the Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize; and Despina Chatzivassiliou-Tsovilis, PACE Secretary General, addressed the participants and officially presented the Prize to Tunç Soyer, Mayor of İzmir, with the Europe Prize trophy, a medal, a diploma and a scholarship of 20,000 euros for a study trip to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg for young people.

İzmir is the fourth Turkish city to obtain the Europe Prize after Istanbul, Bursa and Ankara.

İzmir was rewarded for its active promotion of European values, its political, economic, social and cultural cooperation with its twenty-four twin cities around the world, its environmental commitment and its support for young people. The city promotes sustainability at every stage of its projects, in accordance with European standards.

The city of İzmir becomes a member of the Association of cities awarded the Europe Prize which meets twice a year to discuss subjects of common interest.
