Türkiye: PACE monitors relieved by the release of sick prisoner and former MP Aysel Tuğluk

The co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for the monitoring of Türkiye, John Howell (United Kingdom, EC/DA) and Boriss Cilevics (Latvia, SOC), welcomed the release of former HDP Member of Parliament Aysel Tuğluk.

On 12 October, the Parliamentary Assembly expressed its deep concern about the situation of seriously ill prisoners in Türkiye, among them Ms Tuğluk, who had been detained since 2016 and diagnosed with dementia in March 2021.

We warmly welcome her long overdue release. This decision should raise hope for others: no seriously ill prisoner should have to die in prison. We therefore reiterate our call to the Turkish authorities to pay the utmost attention to the fate of these prisoners. We will continue to monitor closely this human rights issue,” the co-rapporteurs said.
