PACE President in Lisbon: Europe needs the experience of countries outside the European continent to tackle ongoing challenges

Tiny Kox is meeting with Francisco André, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation

During his working visit to Portugal (22-23 February) and consecutive meetings with the President of the Assembly of the Republic Augusto Santos Silva, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Francisco André, the Chairperson and members of the Portuguese delegation to the PACE, Tiny Kox exchanged views on how to reinvigorate and strengthen the Council of Europe’s mandate on the eve of the 4th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe (16-17 May 2023 in Reykjavik), and in the context of the ongoing war of aggression by Russia against Ukraine.

PACE President also delivered a speech at a conference organised in the Portuguese Parliament on “Interparliamentary cooperation in times of crises and in human rights – Europe, Africa and Latin America”, in which he pledged for increased external contacts with countries and international organisations sharing common values and standards with Council of Europe, through a constructive dialogue.

In addition, President Kox thanked the Portuguese delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly – and its Chairperson Edite Estrela (Portugal, SOC) – for their longstanding, very active and positive contribution to the work of the Assembly.
