Parliamentary elections in Serbia: election observation report

Stefan Schennach

Presenting to the Assembly today a report based the findings of the observation of the early parliamentary elections in Serbia, Stefan Schennach (Austria, SOC) recalled the delegation’s statement that assessed that “this elections offered voters a choice between political alternatives and freedoms of expression and assembly were generally respected, but were characterised by unjust conditions, and marred by procedural irregularities and frequent allegations of organising and bussing of voters to support the ruling party in local elections”.

Mr Schennach underlined that the delegation encourages the Serbian authorities to organise a post-electoral seminar with international observers ”to discuss the issues of concerns and ways to improve the legal framework and practices”, in line with Serbia’s obligations as a member State of the Council of Europe, in close co-operation with the Organisation, including the Venice Commission and the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO).
