"In recent months, attacks against LGBTI persons have multiplied in a climate of hate. LGBTI persons have been targeted and stigmatised in certain political discourses that accuse them of various evils that have nothing to do with them. As parliamentarians, we have the responsibility to act and call for respect for the rights of all," emphasised Béatrice Fresko-Rolfo (Monaco, ALDE), PACE General rapporteur on the rights of LGBTI persons, on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOT, May 17).

"I want to reiterate that the rights of LGBTI persons are human rights, that their protection must be guaranteed and should not be constantly called into question. Our parliaments must intensify their efforts to become more inclusive and clearly affirm their support for LGBTI communities. We must also support the defenders of LGBTI rights," she continued.

"At a time when civil society organisations working to defend and protect the rights of LGBTI persons are facing a difficult situation due to the withdrawal of major donors, we must provide greater political and financial support so as not to allow a regression of the rights of LGBTI persons in Europe. I urge parliamentarians to take action," she concluded.
