Role of local and regional authorities in the conservation of the architectural heritage

The Assembly,
1. Emphasising the special responsibility which rests upon regional and local authorities for the conservation of the architectural heritage ;
2. Welcoming initiatives which have been taken to develop the interest of regional and local authorities in this task, and in particular :
a the creation by Europa Nostra of the Historic Towns Forum ; and
b the organisation of a series of symposia, under the joint auspices of the Conference of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe and the Historic Towns Forum ;
4. Asks the Conference of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe, and in particular its Cultural Committee, to examine sympathetically this recommendation ;
5. Calls on all regional and local authorities :
a to study the recommendation, and to endeavour to implement the proposals contained therein for the conservation of the architectural heritage ;
b to make much fuller use of the powers conferred upon them for this purpose ;
c to discuss the recommendation at the next symposium of historic towns, and to exchange information and experience on the matters raised therein.
