Georgios Stamatis (Greece, EPP/CD), PACE’s General Rapporteur on Roma and Travellers, made the following statement ahead of International Romani Language Day (Thursday 5 November 2026):
"Bahtalo 5-to Novembro, Maśkarthemutno Dive e Rromane ćhibaqo!
Happy 5th November, International Romani Language Day! On this day, I pay tribute to the Romani language and to the Roma communities across Europe who preserve, pass on and enrich it. Romani carries Roma communities’ history, memory, identity and cultural heritage. Much of this heritage has been passed down orally from one generation to the next.
Protecting the Romani language also means protecting Roma arts, culture and ways of life. Romani communities must be able to learn, use and protect their language and culture. These linguistic rights are essential to protecting the full rights of Roma and Travellers. Language is a powerful expression of individual and shared identity. Through language, art and tradition, Roma communities can tell their own stories, preserve their shared memory and strengthen their sense of belonging. Passing this heritage on to future generations is both a cultural and a social responsibility.
Linguistic diversity makes our societies stronger. Promoting Romani, supporting its use in education, public life and cultural expression, and encouraging dialogue between cultures can improve recognition, understanding and inclusion. On International Romani Language Day, I reaffirm the importance of protecting and valuing Romani language and culture as an integral part of Europe’s shared heritage.”
