Renate Wohlwend to anti-death penalty activists in the US: ‘Don’t give up!’

Strasbourg, 07.11.2012 - PACE’s General Rapporteur on the abolition of the death penalty, Renate Wohlwend (Liechtenstein, EPP/CD), today regretted the narrow loss of the SAFE California initiative in the California election on 6 November.

Addressing a message to anti-death penalty activists, she stated: “You have come a long way already, don’t give up! The movement for the abolition of the death penalty is a marathon, not a sprint. It has taken Europe a long time to rid itself of this barbaric type of punishment; no doubt America will end up succeeding in this, too.

The Council of Europe and its Assembly is at the forefront of the fight against the death penalty in Europe, which has become a death-penalty-free zone with the sad exception of Belarus.”
