Ukraine’s new President has taken some steps in the right direction, though one of his main tasks will be to rebuild trust among people in the East of the country, said Jordi Xuclà (Spain, ALDE), opening a current affairs debate today on the political and humanitarian consequences of the crisis in Ukraine.
Speaking ahead of the speech by Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, he said that one of the new President’s tasks would be to conduct a dialogue with stakeholders in the East in order to take forward reforms needed by the country, including decentralisation, constitutional reform, greater parliamentary checks and balances, and a fully independent judiciary.
