26/01/2015 Session
According to PACE, the parliamentary elections of 26 October 2014 in Tunisia were “free, inclusive and transparent” and marked a “crucial stage” in the post-revolution transition of the country, giving full legitimacy to the Assembly of the Representatives of the People.
The report by Andreas Gross (Switzerland, EPP/CD), approved today by PACE, makes a number of suggestions for improvements in future elections, including revision of the rules on election campaign financing. The Assembly also suggests that the media should encourage debate on the different agendas and policies and that policy-makers and the various institutions should further encourage young people, women and disadvantaged groups to participate in the electoral process.
PACE will continue to work with the Tunisian authorities and the Assembly of the Representatives of the People to support their efforts on the path of democratisation, in compliance with the standards of the Council of Europe.
