PACE debates Europe’s migration and refugee crisis on second day of its Autumn session

Adopting its agenda today at the opening of its Autumn plenary session, PACE has decided to hold a current affairs debate tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday 29 September, entitled: “A comprehensive humanitarian and political response to the migration and refugee crisis in Europe”. The President of Italy’s Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini and Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland will also intervene in the debate.

This will be followed by a joint debate on two closely related topics: “After Dublin – the urgent need for a real European asylum system” and “Countries of transit: meeting new migration and asylum challenges”.

Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland will now answer questions from the parliamentarians on Monday afternoon instead of on Tuesday.

The report by Pedro Agramunt (Spain, EPP/CD) on “Abuse of pretrial detention in States Parties to the European Convention on Human Rights” is moved to Thursday morning, and the free debate – in which PACE members may express themselves on any topic within the Assembly’s mandate – will take place on Thursday afternoon.
