'The input of the Parliamentary Assembly is crucial to the success of the 4th Summit', says Icelandic Foreign Affairs Minister

Standing Committee meeting in Reykjavik

“Today, we realise more than ever how important it is to stand united in our fight for a just and fair Europe, where democracy, human rights and the rule of law prevail. In addressing and resolving pressing global challenges, multilateralism is key. Together we must strongly advocate for the multilateral system at every opportunity”, said Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland and President of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers, addressing the Standing Committee meeting today in Reykjavik.

A fourth Summit of the Council of Europe, she said, “is a critical opportunity for Heads of State and Government of all the 46 member states to convene and unite around our values and work towards strengthening the organisation. The input of the Parliamentary Assembly is crucial to the success of this venture."

In the Assembly, the Minister stressed, “more than 300 parliamentarians come together, giving rise to a nuanced discussion and giving voice to diverse opinions and political opposition. The Assembly is currently working on a report and resolution on the future of the Council of Europe and the 4th Summit – and I will follow your discussions on this in January with great interest."
