A second round of voting to be held in election for Human Rights Commissioner

No candidate having obtained an absolute majority of the votes cast in the first round of today’s election for the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, a second round of voting will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 24 January 2024.

The results obtained were as follows:

Ms Megleva Kuneva (Bulgaria) – 78 votes
Mr Manfred Nowak (Austria) – 75 votes
Mr Michael O’Flaherty (Ireland) – 97 votes

In the second round, which takes place from 14h30 to 18h CET, only a simple majority is required. A final result is expected to be announced around 20h.

The Commissioner is elected from a list of three candidates put forward by governments.
