PACE President Theodoros Rousopoulos has announced the result of the first round of the election for the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The results are as follows:
Total number of members voting: 241
Number of blank or invalid ballots: 1
Number of valid votes cast: 240
Absolute majority of the votes cast: 121
The votes were cast as follows:
Alain Berset (Switzerland): 92
Didier Reynders (Belgium): 70
Indrek Saar (Estonia): 78
As no candidate has obtained an absolute majority of the votes cast, a second round will take place this afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., for which a relative majority is required.
The President is due to announce the result of the second round of voting before the end of the afternoon sitting, around 7.25 p.m.
