The PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs for Georgia, Edite Estrela (Portugal, SOC) and Sabina Cudic (Bosnia and Herzegovina, ALDE), have strongly condemned the sentencing of Mzia Amaghlobeli to two years' imprisonment.

" This sentence is disproportionate, clearly politically motivated, and an example of the abuse of criminal proceedings to stifle independent media and dissident opinions. We call for her immediate release and urge the authorities to fully respect Georgia’s membership obligations regarding freedom of expression and assembly”, said the rapporteurs, who intend to visit the country later this year.

Georgia is one of ten Council of Europe member states subject to the Assembly’s full monitoring procedure, which aims to help these countries honour their membership obligations and accession commitments.
