Project to build a tunnel under the Channel

The Assembly,

Considering that a project to build a tunnel under the Channel linking the United Kingdom and France has been under examination for many years ;

Considering that the realisation of this project would be an important factor in developing closer contact between the United Kingdom and the countries of Continental Europe ;

Considering, moreover, that improved communications between the United Kingdom and Continental Europe would be particularly important for the successful operation of the proposed Free Trade Area ;

Considering that the realisation of such a project would affect not merely the two countries directly concerned but also have far wider implications, which it is only right that a European parliamentary assembly should consider,

Instructs its Economic Committee to make a detailed study of the Channel Tunnel project, including its economic and financial implications, and to report thereon to the Assembly.
