Position of East European countries with regard to co-operation with the member states of the Council of Europe

The Assembly,

1. Having considered the report of the Committee on European Non-Member Countries ;

2. Noting with regret that the events in Czechoslovakia have disturbed the process of détente in Europe ;

3. Considering that the Council of Europe must nevertheless endeavour to respond to continued signs of interest in Eastern European countries for cooperation in certain fields of the Council's Programme of Work,

4. Instructs its Committee on European Non-Member Countries :

4.1 to continue its study on the position of East European countries with regard to co-operation with the member states of the Council of Europe ;

4.2 to report to the Assembly whenever appropriate on developments in East European countries, especially when they facilitate co-operation with Western Europe and particularly with the Council of Europe.
