Cultural aspects of tourism

The Assembly,

1. Referring to its Resolution 658 (1977) and the opinion of the Committee on Culture and Education (Doc. 3995), on European co-operation in the field of tourism ;
2. Aware that other aspects of the question raise fundamental issues of the socio-cultural development of society, and of Western society no less than those in other parts of the world ;
3. Stressing its belief in the freedom of the individual, while aware of the statutory mission of the Council of Europe to safeguard the cultural heritage of Europe
4. Instructs its Committee on Culture and Education :
a to pursue, where possible in conjunction with Unesco, the question of the relationship between Western Europe and the world as a whole ;
b to examine the work of the CCC in the field of socio-cultural development and its relevance to the question of European co-operation in the field of tourism ;
c to conduct specific studies on :
European gastronomy ;
minority dialects and languages ;
craftsmanship ;
movement between countries of objects of cultural or historical value ;
the conditions and benefits of the Council of Europe cultural identity card.
