The Assembly,

Considering chat the number of cases of malignant degeneration of the respiratory system in smokers has increased considerably during the last twenty-five years ;

Aware that the countries of Europe already devote large sums to seeking remedies for this disease and to studying its causes ;

Considering that the Council of Europe does not possess the scientific resources for contributing directly to this campaign ;

Believing, nevertheless, that every opportunity should be seized to enable scientists to keep themselves informed of studies in progress and of the latest statistics, to compare ideas and to exchange information ;

Believing it desirable for European co-operation in this field to be strengthened,

Recommends the Committee of Ministers to consider the possibility of holding a European symposium, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, to study methods of strengthening European co-opera-in this field, notably in regard to :

a exchange of information,

b health education.
