Author(s):
Parliamentary Assembly
Origin
Assembly debate on 24 January 1983 (21st Sitting) (see Doc. 5006, motion for an order, and Doc. 5018). Text adopted by the Assembly on 24 January 1983 (21st Sitting).

The Assembly,

1. Taking note of the European Parliament's wish to enlarge the Assembly Chamber in order to provide extra seating for the Portuguese and Spanish délégations, following their countries' accession to the European Communities ;
2. Reaffirming its désire to co-operate closely with the Parliament both in political and administrative matters, in the general interest of European unity, but noting that no décision has yet been taken by the competent organs of the Communities conceming the permanent seat of the Parliament ;
3. Expressing its satisfaction with the aesthetic and practical features of the chamber as at présent designed, and concerned lest unnecessary changes in its structure should seriously préjudice the intimacy of its own parliamentary debates, bearing in mind that the Parliamentary Assembly's full statutory membership is 170 whereas the enlarged European Parliament will comprise 518 members ;
4. Conscious that the final décision in this matter rests with the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe,
5. Instructs its Président to liaise closely with the Committee of Ministère, the Secretary General and the architect of the Palais de l'Europe, in order to ensure that no reconstruction project is approved without the prior agreement of the Assembly's Standing Committee.
