1 Report of the Committee on the election of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights

The Committee on the Election of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights held a meeting on Tuesday 11 October 2022 in the morning in Strasbourg, with Mr Titus CORLĂŢEAN (Romania, SOC) in the chair.

The committee discussed the list of candidates to the Court in respect of Denmark.Note

The committee held an exchange of views with the Minister of Justice of Denmark, Mr Mattias TESFAYE, in respect of the reasons why no woman was among the three shortlisted candidates.

2 Conclusions of the committee on the list of candidates submitted by Denmark

The committee did not find “exceptional circumstances” justifying an exception from the rule that single-sex lists are only allowed when the candidates belong to the underrepresented sex (currently women). It therefore invited the Assembly to reject the list and to ask the Danish Government to present a new list of candidates including at least one man and one woman.
