Lack of action in Malta after the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia

Written question No. 786 to the Committee of Ministers | Doc. 15818 | 22 August 2023

Signatories:
Mr Pieter OMTZIGT, Netherlands, EPP/CD

The Maltese public inquiry into Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination, forced by the Council of Europe, made several recommendations to address organised crime and corruption and to protect the lives of journalists and strengthen public interest journalism. Malta has not implemented the recommendations. Yorgen Fenech, who has close ties to many leading political figures in Malta including the former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, was detained as the alleged murder mastermind but has still not faced trial by jury.

Mr Omtzigt

To ask the Committee of Ministers:

When will the Committee of Ministers take action in order to encourage Malta to complete the implementation, to international standards, of all the recommendations of the public inquiry, ensuring transparency at all stages of the process, and to ensure that Malta is making sufficient progress in bringing the accused to trial without delay?
