In February 2023, five United Nations Special Rapporteurs released a report describing the political party Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (Republican Left of Catalonia) as a repressed political organisation and asking Spain for explanations.
This is an example of political persecution in a fully-fledged democracy, but political parties may suffer the same fate in other Council of Europe member States (Turkey, Azerbaijan, Poland, etc.).
