For decades, Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has been a beacon of truth, providing accurate, uncensored news and fostering open debate in countries where press freedom is under threat. With a reach of over 47 million people every week across 23 countries and in 27 languages, RFE/RL has been instrumental in combating disinformation created by dictatorial regimes and promoting democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law across Europe and beyond. It has been a voice of freedom in media environments which are otherwise under heavy censorship and exposed to militaristic propaganda. The abrupt cessation of its funding leaves a dangerous void in countries where authoritarian regimes and anti-democratic forces are eager to silence independent voices.
The Parliamentary Assembly cannot stand by as this vital source of independent information is threatened. This is not just about preserving a media outlet; it is about safeguarding the very foundations of democratic discourse in many regions of the world.
The Assembly should highlight the deep and lasting impact that RFE/RL and other free media continue to have on promoting the Council of Europe’s values – and call on member States and other international actors to ensure that this work can be financially supported and continue.
