During the last six months, Romanian president Traian Basescu has made a number of aggressive, inappropriate and extremist statements, again justifying the aggression on 22 June 1941 against the Soviet Union and the subsequent occupation of Moldova. He stated this again in an interview to the Adevarul newspaper.

He stated that he still disagrees with the negative reaction to his statements on the eve of 22 June 2011 about the justification of aggression against the Soviet Union, stressing that a continuation of the war with the USSR and crossing the Dniester was a mistake, but not the attack and occupation of Moldova.

“My position is associated primarily with the fact that in reality the Republic of Moldova was and is Romanian land. Nobody can take that identity from this former Romanian territory mainly inhabited by Romanians, and now relegated to the borders of Romania”, he stressed.

Referring to the famous order to the Romanian soldiers to cross the River Prut, he said, on 22 June 2011 to the Romanian B1 TV channel, that, under the same conditions, he would probably have given the same order.

Mr Petrenco,

To ask the Committee of Ministers,

  • To what extent are the statements by Romanian President Basescu in line with the standards of the Council of Europe?
  • What steps does the Committee of Ministers intend to take to prevent such revengeful, provocative and aggressive statements being made by the official authorities of a Council of Europe member state?
