Order 370 (1978)

Author(s):
Parliamentary Assembly
Origin
See Doc. 4088, report of the Committee on Science and Technology. Text adopted by the Standing Committee, acting on behalf of the Assembly, on 7 July 1978.

The Assembly,

1. Taking into account the report of its Committee on Science and Technology on ecology-based methods for the treatment of sewage (Doc. 4088) ;
2. Believing it indispensable to preserve the basic fish resources ;
3. Calling attention to the fact that, due to over-fishing and marine pollution, several economically important fish species are imperilled ;
4. Having regard to the fact that pollution may dangerously interfere with the marine ecology, and thus have deleterious effects on fish nutrition, and in particular fish larvae and fries ;
5. Considering that it is essential to take precautions in order to enhance survival possibilities of fish larvae after hatching ;
6. Recognising the need for extensive additional research in order to elucidate the possibilities to prevent decimation of certain fish species, and in particular to improve proliferation conditions and nutrition of larvae and fries ;
7. Stressing the value of undertaking research efforts of this comprehensive scientific area in concert by the different countries of the Council of Europe as well as other interested countries,
8. Instructs its Committee on Science and Technology to examine the possibility of research projects being undertaken with the following main contents :
8.1 whether different species of zooplancton, in particular Artemia and Calanus species, after hatching eggs of different species of fish under artificial conditions, may be a main constituent of a suitable diet for certain species of fish larvae and fries ;
8.2 whether the zooplancton species in question may be produced on the basis of algae grown on organic wastes (for instance faecal material) or grown in defined solutions of inorganic material ;
9. Further instructs the Committee on Science and Technology to examine the desirability of calling an expert panel to consider the compiled scientific material in order to evaluate whether this may form a basis for additional research projects.
