The Assembly,
Recalling Recommendation 297 on the celebration of a Europe Day;
Considering Resolution 34 (1962) of the European Conference of Local Authorities on the same question ;
Having regard to the second sub-paragraph of Article 1 (b) of the Charter of the European Conference of Local Authorities,
Is gratified that the representatives of the local authorities of the member countries as a whole, meeting in Strasbourg for the 4th Session of their Conference, have strongly reaffirmed their support for the institution of a Europe Day and their determination to do everything to promote the success and influence of such a Day;
Shares the conviction of the Conference that Europe Day can only have the desired results and impact if it is held "on the same date in all European countries";
Fully agrees that the date chosen must have "a symbolic and historical significance" in connection with the achievement of European union;
Supports the specific proposals put forward by the Conference regarding the ceremonies that should mark Europe Day;
Stresses the significance, in this connection, of the European flag adopted by member Governments on 8th December 1955, and suggests that Governments and local authorities might use the same colours in public decorations for Europe Day;
Supports the wish expressed by the Conference that some of its representatives be associated with the "Round Table" which Assembly Recommendation 297 requests the Committee of Ministers to organise;
Invites the Committee of Ministers to make every effort to reach an affirmative decision as soon as possible;
To this end, recalls the suggestion of the Working Party which met in February 1962, under the auspices of the Standing Committee of the Conference, that the date chosen should be 1st May or any other day in the first week of that month.
