Author(s):
Parliamentary Assembly
Origin
Assembly debate on 10th May 1963 (8th Sitting) (see Doc. 1591,Doc. 1591, report of the Committee on Agriculture). Text adopted by the Assembly on 10th May 1963 (8th Sitting).

The Assembly,

Noting the extremely valuable work on the marketing of agricultural produce being carried out by OECD, FAO and other Organisations ;

Noting the difficulties experienced in assessing trends in European agriculture which arise from the inadequate and uncoordinated agricultural statistics published by member countries and the almost complete absence of surveys of farmers' future intentions and planting programmes ;

Noting the growth of associations of consumers and organisations for their protection in member States,

Recommends to the Committee of Ministers :

That it should urge member States to give the work of these organisations the fullest support and in particular to implement their recommendations for the co-ordination of animal health and hygiene regulations so as to cause the minimum impediment to European trade ;

That it should consult with member States and national farmers' associations to discover the types of market research and information services which would be of most value to farmers when planning their future production, and to find means of convincing farmers of the importance of accurate statistics ;

That it should take steps to coordinate the work of consumer organisations in Europe and put them in touch with the work of OECD, FAO and other international organisations.
