The Assembly,
1. Taking note of the valuable work accomplished by the 2nd European Population Conference, and intending to make a thorough examination in due course of the conclusions reached by the conference on various economic and social implications of specific demographic trends observed in Europe ;
2. Conscious of the importance, stressed in
Recommendation 10 adopted by this conference, not only of closer and more regular co-operation between European demographers, but also of effective dialogue between these experts on the one hand and policy makers on the other, since any meaningful social or economic planning requires as an essential component accurate knowledge of demographic trends ;
3. Considering that the need for such co-operation and concert is urgent, and that the Council of Europe, by virtue of its special structure and the experience it has gained in this field, is very well placed to co-ordinate and develop further demographic activities at European level ;
4. Welcoming the promises of support in this matter given at the conference by several Ministers speaking on behalf of Council of Europe member States,
5. Recommends that the Committee of Ministers develop the demographic activities of the Council of Europe, and set up a Permanent Committee of Demographic Experts in accordance with the proposals made in
Recommendation 10 of the 2nd European Population Conference, which have the Assembly's full political backing.
