Recommendation 763
(1975)
- Author(s):
- Parliamentary Assembly
- Origin
- Assembly debate on 1 October 1975 (9th Sitting) (see Doc. 3649, report of the Committee on Culture and Education). Text adopted by the Assembly on 1 October 1975 (9th Sitting).
The Assembly,
1. Recalling that as long ago as March 1957 the Greek Government proposed to the Committee of
Ministers of the Council of Europe that a European Cultural Centre be set up at Delphi to serve the
member states of the Council of Europe and other countries party to the European Cultural
Convention, and that by September 1962 the Committee of Ministers had already approved the
scheme in principle ;
2. Considering that the foundation of a centre of this kind would meet a European need for a better
knowledge of the civilisations and cultures of Europe ;
3. Regretting that the political situation in Greece from 1967 till the return of Greece to the Council
of Europe in 1974 was such that this plan was prevented for some time from coming to fruition ;
4. Noting with appreciation that the Greek Government has provided a site and has completed the
construction of a suitable building for the centre ;
5. Welcoming the fact that this project has been taken up again and is under present consideration by
the Committee of Ministers on the basis of a report submitted by the Greek Government,
6. Recommends that the Committee of Ministers reaffirm their previous decision and co-operate fully
with the Greek Government to ensure that a European Cultural Centre at Delphi is operational as
soon as possible.
