The Assembly,

1. Having appreciated the significance of the declaration made before it by the Secretary General of the United Nations in May 1966 ;
2. Moved by the poignant appeal in favour of peace and of negotiations made by His Holiness the Pope in his latest encyclical ;
3. Concerned by the acceleration of the Vietnam conflict and the dangerous dimensions that it is liable to assume if it continues ;
4. Convinced that the consequences of the extension of the war in Vietnam are making themselves felt in Europe as elsewhere ;
5. Recognising the difficulties that the Secretary General of the United Nations is facing on all sides in carrying out his mission,
6. Pays tribute to his courageous efforts in favour of peace ;
7. Regrets his decision not to request the renewal of his mandate and hopes he will reconsider it ;
8. Expresses its confidence in his appreciation of his responsibilities towards the world community ;
9. Expresses the wish that no effort will be spared to avoid aggravating a crisis within UNO that would be more than ever liable to compromise the peace of the world.
