The Assembly,
Re-affirming its concern with regard to the situation of Hungarian refugees :
Noting with interest the aide-memoire on the need for international assistance to refugees from Hungary, submitted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the High Commissioner for Refugees in support of their joint appeal launched on 11th March 1957;
Sharing the views of the Secretary- General and of the High Commissioner that further financial contributions and increased opportunities for emigration of Hungarian refugees from European countries will be required to solve the problems of these refugees and relieve the disproportionately heavy burden which the Governments of Austria and Yugoslavia are forced to bear,
Pays tribute to Member States for the considerable contributions they have already made in order to relieve the plight of Hungarian refugees;
Expresses its deep appreciation of the achievements of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in promoting the resettlement of Hungarian refugees and co-ordinating arrangements for their emergency relief and care and maintenance;
Recommends that the Committee of Ministers should strongly support the second joint appeal made by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for further contributions and should urge Governments, I Members of the Council of Europe, generously to respond to this appeal.
