25/06/2026 Session
Sandra Zampa (Italy, SOC), the Chair of the Assembly’s Migration Committee, opened a current affairs debate today on migration to Europe, pointing out that the debate was necessary because of two recent developments at European level: the entry into force of the EU’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum, and the adoption of the Chișinău Declaration by the Council of Europe.
Commenting on the Declaration, she said: “The universality of rights is in the very DNA of the Convention system. If we start to call this into question by introducing exceptions for certain groups of people, we know full well what the risk is; history clearly shows us where this can lead.” Only the Strasbourg Court could decide on how the Convention should be interpreted, she pointed out.
Around 20 members requested to speak during the debate. No text is adopted by the Assembly following a current affairs debate.
