01/10/2025 Session
Opening a current affairs debate on “The political crisis in Serbia,” Victoria Tiblom (Sweden, ECPA), one of the co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Serbia, outlined the events that led to the deterioration of the situation in the country, referring to the escalation of mass protests since November 2024 and the surge in violence across Serbia at the end of August, following violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces in major cities.
“Since then, the situation has not completely calmed down, as protests continue and protestors now firmly call for new elections,” she emphasised.
“I unequivocally condemn all forms of violence, whether committed by state authorities, pro-government groups, or protesters, and once again urge all sides to refrain from further violence and to engage in constructive dialogue,” she said.
Ms Tiblom plans to visit the country with Yunus Emre (Türkiye, SOC), the newly appointed co-rapporteur, to finalise the monitoring report on Serbia.
No report is prepared for a current affairs debate, and no text is adopted.
