PACE President remains deeply concerned over Ashtiani case in Iran

Strasbourg, 03.11.2010 – “I wish to add my voice to those calling on Iran not to execute Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani,” Mevlüt Çavusoglu, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), said today in a statement. “While fears of an immediate execution now seem to have lessened, I am deeply concerned that her life remains under threat.”

“I note Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki’s reported statement today that a final verdict in Ashtiani’s case has not yet been reached, and once again appeal for her release.”

“The Council of Europe is resolutely opposed to the death penalty, and no executions take place in our 47 member states, three of which border Iran. Executing Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani would only take Iran further away from Europe, and I ask the authorities not to take this step.”
