PACE's Standing Committee has demanded "immediate action" to save endangered languages in Europe, including raising awareness of them, encouraging their transmission to younger generations, and ensuring they are taught using new information technologies, if necessary.
A report by Ertugrul Kumcuoglu (Turkey, EDG) said some 230 languages have become extinct in the last fifty years. In Europe, there are estimated to be at least 18 highly endangered languages, including Saami, Livonian, Karelian, East Frisian, Cornish, Breton, Istriot, Yiddish, Gagauz and Cypriot Arabic.
